Reception Year for Schools

We know how crucial it is for children to enjoy their first literacy experience, so using their own PiLT Literacy Book ensures that children can take those early steps with pleasure. The early writing stages begin with their own personal experiences of family and home.

The programme closely links with a range of Early Learning Goals, which are found in the front of the book, next to the “I can steps for reading and writing.” This ensures that parents can be directed to complement the steps you are doing at school especially if the PiLT Writing Book is used as a home school link book. Alternatively, books can be bespoke, designed to accommodate your own school handwriting policy and logo. You can also have 2 PiLT books, one for parents to use at home and one for school. You may also want to use the book as an intervention for younger Year One pupils, who may need catch up sessions with a TA.

Courses, conducted by skilled and experienced trainers, are available for Teachers, TAs, volunteers and parents. Training for PiLT is also available via Zoom, in your school, or at North London Business Centre as requested, by qualified trainers.

The programme has a strong focus on Oracy and creative play, drawing and writing and is most effectively used in tandem with your school’s specific phonic programme.

It can have set 2 phase decodables added to it, or you can supply your own school decodable texts. BLEER training will provide online training of Ransom reading stars, with a strong focus on texts, that complement the Letters and Sounds programme. Additionally, we provide training on how to do a running record on decodable texts, using Ransom phonics assessment books.

Giving children the opportunity to express their ideas and make connections with their own lives as well as making links between books is so important. Book packs, have been arranged, based on their content, from a range of decodables and colour book band texts to be shared at home or school. This system helps children to expand and apply new vocabulary in meaningful sentences. They can then see and hear how the new words they have learnt, join together into different patterned phrases, which will serve to strengthen their fluency and understanding. These essential words for speaking are generally based on most phonic programmes, but there are a few additional very important words such as “Here” or “Look” that are needed to make sense of where those essential decodable words are to be found in a child’s natural spoken words and writing. These words are outlined with colour band colours, starting with Pink Level 1, Black Level 2, Red Level 3-5.

Training is also available for doing running records with book band texts.
