About Us
My name is Angela Lee and I’m a literacy consultant.
I support parents and teachers in helping children enjoy books as they develop the early stages of literacy. I have designed this programme which I hope will be fun and useful for parents,carers or teachers as they work with children at home or at school.
What is personalised learning?
One definition is…
“… the drive to tailor education to individual need, interest and aptitude so as to fulfill every young person’s potential” (DfES definition). It is important when you are teaching reading that you have a balanced approach.
What does balanced literacy mean?
The first part of establishing a well balanced literacy approach is for schools to implement their own effective phonics programme. BLEER offers a range of well organised phonics training and resources to support this both at home and at school. The second part of the approach is to balance good phonics practice by focusing on oracy; different language structures; phrasing and expression, thereby ensuring that children comprehend the layers of meaning they encounter.
The resources and training we offer enable this, by valuing the child’s voice within a range of cross curriculum themes. The enriching texts offered in our programmes allow children to connect to their world and life experiences in an enjoyable manner.
“As a reading Specialist in London, I have developed two main programmes PiLT, (Playing in Literacy Themes) and WiNC ( Writing in the National Curriculum). With the support and participation of a wide group of independent Educators and Publishers, whom I would like to thank and who are working alongside me, as partners.”
Our Philosophy
Our philosophy is to create and nurture children’s Literacy and Oracy. Our conceptualised approach, aims to instil confidence, choice and enjoyment in reading for children whilst raising their attainment and allowing opportunities for talk.
We provide thematic engaging Literacy experiences, targeted at the child’s appropriate level.
Additionally, we support parents and staff with quality differentiated resources and training in order to facilitate positive outcomes for their children.
Our Mission
To strengthen links between pupil voice with the following concepts:
- Play theme Props;
- Perspectives in Pictures;
- Phonics and patterns;
- Phrasing, punctuation and expression;
- Prediction, questioning, points of view and summarising;
- Patterns and partitions in language structures;
- Placement of ideas in Print to portray meaningful messages.
How we help
An independent team, under my supervision, have written the programme, as a response to a need that I felt was apparent in the teaching of Cross Curiculum Literacy in infant Schools.
I also wanted to correlate a strong Oracy programme (drawing on the expertise of independent advisors) that could also be used flexibly with children new to the English language or with long term Special Educational Needs (S.E.N), alongside other beneficial programmes. I personally have written extra reading texts and designed a personalised children’s writing books to go with the programme which enables children to display their ideas and understanding, through expressive text, art, play and writing. As well as a way of recording and evidencing assessment, progression and next steps, it scaffolds their letter and word knowledge as they become familiar with using a handy word bank.
B.L.E.E.R. (Balanced Literacy Enjoying Early Reading) Training Ltd has been growing over the last eight years and has offices and training facilities based in North London Business Park in Barnet. However we also have a team that will visit and train in schools, as well as new steps to train parents and staff online. The training supports schools in organising volunteers to develop children in Oracy and Literacy, in a complimentary and quality manner.
