Playing in Literacy Themes

Playing in Literacy Themes (P.i.L.T.) has elements and characters from texts, which are familiar and complimentary to a range of reading and Library books you will already be using in the reception classroom.

The P.i.L.T. programme, when delivered properly has extra parts that link to early text, to meaningful play situations, games, puzzles, library books, poems and songs.

These themes link into young children’s own personal experiences and natural spoken language through themes such as family, pets, transport, jungle, farm and dinosaurs. They also work as a strong foundation for a stimulus for children’s early writing composition.

The programme is carefully designed to move up the coloured international book band levels, and working alongside appropriate phonic phases. Thus progression is clearly seen in their PiLT home writing books and plans are designed to encourage children to strengthen their oral responses from both books and play.

Assessment sheets are clearly organised to give a framework for adults to record the children’s progress after the lessons, either at school or home.
